A winner and a loser

The Currants and Coxcombs block wouldn't wait, I mean I couldn't wait and so I just had to sew a block up to see it in fabric and it's turned out just as I had hoped. I think this will have to have some more of the blocks to play with and grow up to be the next red and green quilt in my series. It's a winner in my book.

The green solid is Moda Bella, pistachio and the deep red is a P&B  fabric. Istuffed the berries with a little polyester stuffing.
The inspiration for drawing up this block came from an antique quilt over at the Quilt Complex and you can see it over here, scroll down a bit to see the whole quilt. What do you think of the quilting and stuffed work on it?
I thought I'd put the Cherry Tree blocks up on the design wall and see how they would look together and I didn't like how they were playing. I thought it was the fact that I had too many different types of green, especially the emerald ones.
At this point I seriously though about rescuing a couple by changing a few leaves and starting again with the others blocks.
Then I removed that last block I'd made pictured at the bottom of the above photo which had light lime coloured leaves and now I like the arrangement a lot better. That block was a loser.
I'll have to keep these up on the wall and proceed with some toned down blocks. I'm still mulling over changing a few pieces but I'll wait until I've done a couple more and then make my mind up.
Never be afraid to move in a new direction if you don't like what's happening.
Janet

oh my I loved the block on paper but in fabric it is just amazing!!!!! I am very excited about this one!
sorry about the block, hmmm maybe just take off a few leaves and add some darker ones?
or it would make a nice pillow, little quilt?

hi Janet
beautiful new block! I love this block and have always wanted to try it. Just love making those berries. What is your method?
I wonder if balance, scale is what is bothering the arrangement. I'd reserve the block and see how things develop. Seems there are heavy blocks and light blocks in this design.
I love your lime greens!

That 'loser' block looks just fine. You're being too critical of the fabrics. The block does not stand out as being too bright or different at all. Fabric looks a bit yellowy perhaps but you have yellow in the blocks, so nothing amiss at all. May be when you have additional blocks completed you'll find it fits in perfectly. It is a beautiful block!

your cockscomb and currants are beautiful! .. someday I'll do one too but for now I'll just admire yours. I can't remember how many blocks are in the Cherry Tree quilt .. the one you took out might play well after all .. leave it nearby just in case. Personally I LOVE all the different greens you are using!

You have a really great sense of what works and what dosen't. It feels a little harsh calling that block a loser, it's a winner in it's own right but just for a different project. A lovely cushion perhaps? Your currants block is such a super star winner!!

Well I like all of the blocks and I agree with everyone else....lol I just love looking at your work and when I clicked to look closer, things were different, but I like it! How did you make your photos do that?

Your new block is just beautiful Janet! I love all of them -- and like Barb, I'm wondering if it was maybe just the scale and not the color that was bothering you. I LOVE the stuffed block that you linked to -- that whole quilt is just beautiful!

Wow that block looks amazing - I can see why you couldn't wait to make it. I love the way you alternated the colours on the cherries.

I really like your C & C block! So very satisfying with the swirly movement and the tiny circles. After seeing this and B. Brackman's rose/lily block this morning, I'm feeling such a yearning to do REAL applique again. I need to finish the silly boxer short/nakie man I'm working on and start a more elegant project...more glorious and less gutter! Thanks for the inspiration!

In stitches,
Teresa :o)

There are 20 some blocks in the Cherry Tree Quilt - plenty of time to "blend" or modify greens on new blocks so that in the end they all play just fine.....

Your C & C is great... keep on...

Your newest block is my favorite! Just love the combination of the fabrics and the simple but elegant pattern. And the antique quilt, you got your inspiration from is utter perfection.

Your new berry block is a winner for sure. I like the green shade. And the berries are perfect. I visited the quilt you refer to and what a beauty! I think the quilting is what makes the quilt so outstanding.

Beautiful block. The cherry tree blocks also look beautiful and great together. I think the lime green looks good, as you have used several different greens. Wait until you have more blocks done and see what you think. You could also use some of the other darker greens on few removed leaves from this block. Just keep going with this project.

I love....love....love the Moda Bella pistachio and deep red....great choice. I might have to get that combo started in an appliqué myself...... Beautiful. Teri

P.S. The other squares look great together.

Your Coxcomb and Currants block is excellent - love the stuffed berries!

I struggled with that same block - the one with the 4 sections of flowers...I think when it is all together we will have very good feelings about it - individually some of the blocks look "odd" but have their own charm...wish we knew more about the original quiltmaker!

I agree about changing directions, because when you look at something and it just doesn't seem right, well, then it isn't. I love the new block you made, I'm going to change out a block in BTCT and do something like this. Plus I'm adding a pot to one of the realy basic blocks. When I get to the end, then I will kick out blocks if necessary.

Your blocks look great! I do that all the time...move in a new direction! If I didn't, I'd never finish anything! LOL

Your blocks are beautiful Janet - i love them all. I do believe one has to go with one's gut instinct.. I've had times when people have said 'no that colour is fine, use it' but it somehow never seems to sit right with me and irritates me all the way through! I'd suggest keeping the outcast block nearly and see how it feels as the project grows. I'm off to check out the original c and c quilt which inspired you.

I love your stuffed berries!! The whole block is wonderful and the quilt that inspired you is out of this world! So are you planning to do the trapunto work too??
I like your Cherry tree blocks - all of them. Some of the blocks are more traditional while others are more whimsical in style. Together I think they work great. But they need to make you happy - it's your quilt!

I love your new red and green block; and I think you Cherry Tree blocks are looking great, too. Even if you were to keep the "loser", you could always incorporate some of those greens elsewhere and then it would fit in nicely.

Love the Coxcomb and Currants. Boy,
you whipped it up fast.
I agree with you removing the newest block from the Cherry Tree.
I am sure whatever you come up with
will look great. You have such an
eye for color and texture.

I'm glad you didn't make us wait too long to see your Currants and Coxcomb's block! Lol. It is magnificent! The original quilt is amazing!! I love all the trapunto work on it! It must have taken ages to quilt!

Agree that your new block is wonderful! The stuffed berries just set it over the top. The original quilt is magnificent - the quilting is just amazing! I also like the block that you aren't sure about including - the cherry quilt is full of whimsy and the different fabric colors add to that feel. Maybe let it percolate a while? Always love your projects, Janet.

LOVE the block, Janet! It's one of my favorite patterns, and yours is wonderful. I need to get started on the Cherry Tree blocks, and yours are inspiring.

the currant and coxcomb block is fabulous. And I checked out the trapunto one too. Neat.
I liked that block so much I did a wallhanging in some modern fabrics. You can see it on my blog header.
Your other blocks are great too. Even the one you don't like.

Your Currants & Coxcombs block is beautiful Janet!!!

I like the block that you don't think fits in with your Cherry Tree blocks. Perhaps when you have more blocks around it, it might look better.

The Currants and Coxcombs block is gorgeous! I love the added dimension of the stuffed berries. The original, with all of the trapunto, is gorgeous.

I do like the look of the six together-- they really share a flavor that just works so well. But who knows? After you finish some more blocks, you might find that the lime one works. :)

Coxcomb block is great, I need to work on reproducing mine.

The block you removed might fit in better turned once to the left- with the flowers pointing up.
