Project rotation

I couldn't be happier with the cornucopia. I took out the orange and turned it into a nashi pear and toned down the colours of one of the other fruits. It could be a peach now. As long as they kinda look like fruit, I'm happy and the colours go with my other blocks. I have butterflies added to quite a few blocks so added one to this as well. Onto the next one soon.
When I don't have any applique prepped, I'll sometimes break out and do something really different for a change.A stitchery block is a nice change.
My sewing room is so trashed, I left this block off the last lot I blogged about. It was buried under a pile of stuff.
I just had to say that so you don't think I do without sleep and stitch all night to get so much done.
I've been having a bit of ufo guilt lately, I seem to bounce from one thing to another. It's good for blogging but it's starting to bother me a bit. I used to love the project rotation, I think it adds variety and stops me burning out. At times like this I wish I was one of those quilters that just had three projects going at any one time. One to piece, one to applique and one to quilt. I'll be thinking about it, at this rate I'll not get a finish any time soon.

The block looks stunning! You are right about the multiple projects.. After a while they get to me. But lately I have been unproductive and that gets to me even more! Love your latest Flower Garden Block.

The fruit look really life like! How did you make the white spot on the apple? Was it part of the fabric or did you paint it on? Looking at your appliqué, my fingers are itching to do something similar too, appliqué being my "first love". But first I really have to finish some of my WIP and UFOs. Vreni x

Cornucopia looks lovely Janet & so are the other two. I think you're doing great with the rotations. I'm one of those other lot who does only one thing at the time, it's because I'm not a good multi tasker with anything! So long you're having fun with all the different project, thats all that matters.Kim McL

I've had a similar feeling of UFO guilt lately! I just moved house which meant that I had to re-organise all my sewing things. It was quite a shock to the system to realise just how many quilts I've started but not finished! I'm blogging about some of them this week ;)

The cornucopia literally took my breath away. Your work is lovely, lovely, lovely!

I know what you mean about not getting any finishes. With three major applique projects going, nothing else seems to get done. So every once in awhile I try to finish up a UFO just to get that "done" feeling. As always, I love seeing what you are working on.

Aahhh who needs a finish when you can play with so much gorgeous thread, fabric and colour! You are inspiring no matter what you are doing Janet. xo

I love all your work, but I think this cornucopia is stellar! Those fruits look dimensional and the butterfly is a fun added touch. Bravo!

I love the stitchery! I am working on a similar girl!
I think we all have a few things happening at once in our sewing space!

The peach in your Baltimore block looks real! Good fabric choices.

Your Album block is beautiful! Know what you mean about being frustrated by project hopping...it does seem to make projects take forever to finish!

Marjorie said...

Your fruit looks amazing. Why were you ever worried?

Janet said...

Lovely. How cute is the sitchery?
Where is the picture of your sewing room? I am sure it is not messy at all.

Fantastic! I knew you'd find a way to make it work. It is perfect!

What a fun stitchery too.

I used to sit beside a woman at a quilt group, who only ever worked on one project at a time - she would plod away until she was finished, without ever seeming to much enjoy her sewing ...... she was also possibly the most boring person I have ever known!! So I think it is better for all of us to do several projects at once, as it keeps everything fresh! The cornucopia block is stunning!!

So there with you! Bounce, bounce, bounce...

Wow, the colors and shading in the cornucopia block are just outstanding. I think the rotating projects does keep us from burn out. Eventually you will take out an old project and realize how close to finished you really are and be pleasantly surprised.
Happy Stitching,

Your color adjustments were perfect - everything works together so well in harmony...lovely soft, mellow look to the block and those green grapes look good enough to eat

Who among us doesn't have multiple projects going on? We wouldn't be 21st Century quilters if we didn't!
:o)

The cornucopia block is so beautiful on so many levels! The colors are so harmonious, the balance is perfect and your workmanship is awesome...WOW! The project rotation is fun because we never get bored, but it is a little hard to coordinate and keep track of them, isn't it?? Maybe the finishes aren't so often, but there will be a lot of them!

In stitches,
Teresa :o)

Your blocks are gorgeous--just wonderful! Masterful color/fabric selections! Perhaps the bouncing around is what helps keep you doing such fantastic work--always a fresh eye? Just so you know, the fact that you are working on so many beautiful projects makes me not feel so bad about my zillions of half done UFO's. When I grow up, I wanna be like you!

I understand what you mean about UFO guilt, but I certainly do enjoy looking at all your different, and equally amazing projects. It boggles my mind how much you accomplish (and the quality of your work), and I must admit that I actually have wondered at times if you ever sleep.

Darlene said...

Your block is beautiful, Janet.

I understand how you feel, Janet but I know you would tell me to relax and enjoy. No one is keeping track of your projects, etc - you must do what makes you happy and not what you believe is expected of you. (hugs)

Wow!! Lucky that block isn't lying around at my house, my partner would eat it!! The fruit look so real, especially the nashi pear! It's funny how we have just a couple projects, then another little one, then before we know it there's lots of quilts waiting to be finished.

Wow - that cornucopia is amazing Janet! I just told someone that I too feel like I'm jumping around getting nothing finished. But I do sleep!!

I know what you mean - I have 5 "active" projects on my sewing table right now but this afternoon I pulled out another ufo and worked on that instead. What I really want to do is start something new (something red and white) but the ufo guilt is calling my name instead.
Your cornicopia block turned out so lovely. I can't wait to see your next Baltimore block.

I hear you on the UFO. I finsihed mine but my blog remains pretty inactive. It is noce to have different things to share on the blog. I think your applqiue big block and little block are fab. You get a lot done!

The dimension that was created by your choice of fabrics in the cornucopia block is beautiful, Janet. I absolutely love it!

Thimbleanna said...

I love all of your projects. I often feel the same way about jumping from one project to the next. I've been worrying a lot about my UFO's lately too. At what point DOES a project become a UFO? If I start on a new project, it's not a UFO yet is it? But if I put it down and work on another one for a day or two, then does the first one become a UFO? Questions. I have Questions LOL!

Your blocks are all beautiful, but the cornucopia block is fantastic! The fruit looks so real. Nice work.

Your cornucopia block is fantastic! The shading on the fruits is amazing. I so admire how you are able to choose just the right fabric for perfect effect. It's always there..no matter what style of work you're doing. :)
Your Flower garden block is so cheerful!

Your cornucopia looks beautiful, so realistic. The embroidery block is whimsical and cute. I'm thinking I really like your idea as well of project rotation with one applique, pieced and quilting. For me I could work on these 3 at the same time since the applique tends to take longer. The one I'm just starting on is 20 blocks and a year long. I'm going to need some distractions along the way for sure!

Crazy for Art said...

Your colors are so spot on! I like this version better but I didn't think the other was bad though!

Your cornucopia block is just beautiful. I think your changes really made a difference. You do get a lot done and I'm still not convinced that you sleep! :) I agree with you about UFOs. I used to work on and finish one project at a time and it was such a great feeling. Now I've got about 15+ UFOs and some of them I've even lost interest in ever completing. I'll be donating them to my local guild and they'll be finished (by someone else) for a good cause. If I could just stop reading blogs and seeing all kinds of inspiration, I might be able to work on my older UFOs without getting side-tracked. LOL

Oh Janet your cornucopia is amazing to look at! Eye candy for certain. The variety of fabrics are delicious and I really love the leaf treatment! Of course I'm enjoying everything I see and all that I read as you're always so very REAL about things. It isn't that I'm happy to know you're snowed under with projects and dealing with the guilt of it all but I'm comforted to know this place "I'm in" isn't an ALONE space. I love your work and your techniques and all you share but your honesty has got to be my favorite thing of all!!!

I always admire your handwork. It is superb.

Shhhh!!! If you don't talk about UFO guilt, you can bury it at the back of your mind so it won't get you. At least, that's what I keep trying to tell myself. Sigh... I love the idea of project rotation too, but sometimes I really do feel the weight of all of the unfinished-ness.

Cornucopia = gorgeous!!!!
