Crap, calories and critters

I'm a sucker for a block of the month and the circle game from Amitie is one that had such an eclectic mix of fabrics that I had to join in even though the blocks are hand pieced. I'm a bit crap at hand piecing but that doesn't stop me from trying to improve. Hand piecing with Crispy is my lifesaver.

Lets just say that after piecing this far, it was going to look like a bra in the middle and drastic action needed to be taken to save the block. I did check the templates afterwards and they were off maybe because of photocopying distortion.
I drew a circle on freezer paper, ironed that to my hard pressing board, pinned the block and wet it down with a spray bottle. I pressed it damp and it saved the block although I'll need to resew some tucks.
In future, I'll check the hand drawn templates first.
There was no way I was going to be able to hand piece the circle in the middle so I resorted to applique. I have a few blocks to catch up yet.
I went shopping recently and I just love those big kitchen stores that are full of gadgets. Despite some protest from my significant other, I bought an aebleskiver pan. When are you going to use that he says. I'll make you some this weekend says I. I blame Lori and Anna for showing off their aebleskivers every Christmas. They taste like pancakes in case you haven't tried them.
I had fun trying to make nice round balls but I got it by the last batch. With Maple syrup and icing sugar, they were delicious and the hole in the middle was the best part. Kids would love these. As for DH, he loved them a lot.
This critter has come back after an absence of months. I think it's a female Opossum, there seems to be a full pouch so there could be a baby. It comes  up the back steps and sits in the porch or on top of the broom cupboard out there. Last night I went outside and it gave me a fright up on the cupboard making meowing noises. The darn things are protected so we can't relocate it as they can end up as roadkill trying to get back. The only reason we made a possum box for it was to keep it out of the roof cavity, now it acts like a pet.

Janet, I just love your circle blocks. Your piecing looks very good to me.
Love the look of your pancake balls, I must look up about these. I am a sucker for gagets in the kitchen shop also.

I had a closer look at your block and can't find anything wrong with it Janet. Love the choice of colours you have used too. Nice work! No I haven't had aebleskivers before. They look good though. Hope Mr Q likes them - Hugs Nat

I should be getting ready to go out and had to read your blog first. Who could resist the title. The block looks great to me and just my sort of thing. Looks like I may be getting to item no 13 on the list sooner than I expected. Yummy food too. Must skedaddle.

Fantastic block, Janet! It reminds me of a passion flower. Very complex, fantastic choise of fabric.
Those apple slieces (danish origin?) looks very tempting, too...

I've never heard of an abel---- but they sure look yummy. Geeze, I can't even remember how it's spelled.

Your block looks wonderful...but difficult. But I have faith in you. *wink*

Possums wouldn't be so hard to take if only they were a bit cuter looking.

Yum... your aebleskivers look delicious as well as beautiful. And your block turned out gorgeous. I don't know how you do it; I would never dare to piece curves by hand. I shudder thinking of the mess I've made in previous attempts ;).

The block is just beautiful. Your efforts really paid off!! But I must say you have me wanting to go out and get an ableskivers pan now. They look yummy!! That is some opossum, they don't look like that here in the states. They look more like giant rats, no fur on the tail and just large.

That is an unbelievable block. I like to hand piece but I would have to pass on that one. You're very brave! It's not fair to show such goodies to us diabetics!
Is that critter people freindly? It looks pretty big to me.

AWESOME block and I just love your fabric choices and colors. Wow. I love aebelskivers. Perhaps your possum friend was hoping to share?

Your food looks soo good....a nice warm breakfast.

Crispy is pretty amazing....

Janet,
Your hand piecing looks great. I've thought about joining since you showed the first one a while back.
Yunny on the pancakes. Your critter looks like a small kangaroo. I hope it is not destructive. Happy stitching.

Love your hand pieced block! Can't wait to see more. Crispy is a gem isn't she? We have that same pan and my hubby makes those and they are wonderful!
Our possums look so different from yours. Yours are MUCH cuter than ours. How is their disposition? Ours are mean when cornered. They are not protected in the US just big pests!

I think you are too hard on yourself Janet...your block is gorgeous and looks well made to me. Love the colors and the different design!

Your Opossum is much cuter than the Opossums here...which are not an endangered species. I have had several run-ins with them over the years and I don't like them one little bit...lol

Okay, now I'm going to have to research the aebleskiver pan...never heard of one before, but the round pancakes look delish!

I've never seen an aebleskiver before! It looks yummy! And your block looks amazing! Glad you made it and not me though! LOL

I love hand-piecing! It's one of the few quilt-y things I do best! Your block looks like a good challenge.

And those aebleskivers look very much like sopaipillas that we've adopted from Mexico. Definitely yummy stuff. Yours look delicious!

I love that block...don't know if I would have the patience!

What a lovely block and I htink appliqueing the center circle was the way to go on it.

I would not like to have an oppossum romping around outside my door. I hope she realizes you are not her owner soon!

YankeeQuilter said...

I have an American Possum who visits my back yard occasionally...not nearly as nice as yours!

Appliqueing the center circle sounds like the right choice. I did that on my Mariner's compass and after watching some others in the class struggle with piecing the center I was very happy with my decision!

Sharon said...

What an interesting block, I've never seen this before, I too would have appliqued the center circle. This is going to make an amazing project.
Hmmm, ...skiver pan, never heard of that, I'll have to look it up today.
Your possum is much cuter than American possums..ours look like big rats, yuck!

Meredith said...

have fun with hand work. I would applique the center. I like teh bright fabric choices.

Meredith said...

Oh and the Quilt stores here do not have BOM that look like that. They seem to be easy with the only thing near a challenge is some appliqué. Yes I am a little jealous.

Mary said...

I love your circle block. Hand-piecing is the way I learned quilting. I guess that dates me! I started before rotary cutters and acrylic rulers and love modern tools but there are some places they just don't work as well as the old way. Appliqueing the center circle is just how we did it.

Your aebleskivers look so good! I haven't had any for years so may have to break down and get a pan. Yum!!!

Oh no - life's too short for handpiecing! I can sit for hours doing applique and hand quilting, but I much prefer machine piecing. When we were in Melbourne on holiday some years ago, we were startled by a creature on the balcony of our apartment - I think it was probably an opossum.

Una said...

You are too hard on yourself - crap is not the right word, I'd say great! Because the block is just wonderful. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your circles!

Cool block. I used Crispy's tips for piecing too. Great site.
I have not ever seen those "pancakes" before. Very fascinating.
Well, at least your possum is cuter than our possums.lol

I'm so laughing about the Possum pet! It looks VERY different from our Midwestern U.S. possums, bigger ears, less rodent-like.

I so wish I was doing that Block of the Month!

Ann Champion said...

You did a great job of saving the block. It's such a fun looking BOM. I would have appliqued the center too.

Your aebleskivers look yummy! My DH is diabetic, so I don't make pancakes or that sort of thing.

I think your Opossum is cute! :)

Gosh what a superbly stunning block. How inspirational that is. Wow!

I love your visitor. She's cuteamous.

Your blocks look perfect -as usual. I think you're your own worse critic. I'm looking forward to seeing some more.

Crispy said...

WOW the block is gorgeous!! I would have appliqued the circle on too. To help prevent the block from creating a "D" cup in the middle is to make sure you are sewing one seam towards the center and then the next seam away from the center, alternating all the way around.

Awww, that possum loved you LOL. Your possums are so much prettier than ours. Love that new block -- what a fun challenge.

And YIPEE! You got an aebelskiver pan! I just love them -- but then you knew that LOL!

Nice critter.

I'm total crap at hand piecing - I applaud you for doing it. This block looks fun.
We are a "skiver" family too as my husband is Danish. Yours look perfect! Wow, you got good at that fast.

What a cool block! No wonder you couldn't resist. It looks great to me.
Your aebeskivers look delicious!

Janet said...

I would love to have the opossum in my yard! I looked at the Amitie circle quilt as well. It is so gorgeous, but I couldn't justify starting something else new.

Pat said...

Oh yes, next to a well stocked quilt shop, a kitchen store ranks right up there! Your baking looks delicious - that hole in the middle lets all the calories out, right?

Your hand pieced block is lovely and lays beautifully - looks like a little stinker to piece for the faint of heart.
Will trade your critter for our muskrats in the pond...ours ate all our special water lilies.

LOVE your hand pieced block, Janet.

I have an ebelskiver (sp?) pan and hope to give them a whirl soon! : D

That opossum would surely give me a scare too. As a kid, a Mother and babies would come to our home in the dark. they made curious little mewing noises. We had raccoons too. I'm not a big fan of either.

I have been doing The Circle Game from Amitie, and am up to date with the program experiencing no issues with templates or anything!!
Have you contacted the girls there? They are always so helpful - maybe ask for Jenny as it is her quilt, I am so she'd be happy to help. I contacted her during her last block of the month and she gave me some great over the phone pointers!
Your blocks look beautiful - I this block of the month pattern so much I am doing it in multiple colour combos and as for those tasty treats, they look pretty amazing too!

Happy stitching.
