The next big thing

I've been champing at the bit to get back to the vine quilt. I looked back on my blog and I can't believe it was last February that I worked on it. I spent two afternoons drawing up the pattern for the fourth of thirteen panels. Maybe I'll get a few more done this year.
I have an old cardboard box of scraps that I put away for the quilt along with my patterns. I think I better get a better container for a couple of my ongoing projects to make life easier.
The best part is when I've done the prep and I can get onto the stitching. As I sat down to enjoy myself, a conversation arose with Mr Quiltsalott that I'll share with you. At this stage, the vines had been basted down ready to tuck the leaves under.

Mr Q:  That central vine looks a bit big in relation to everything else.
Me: Yes, I know, I think you're right but I only have a 1/2" bias tape maker and I think it came out a bit bigger than it should. Let me lay it out and have a look.
Mr Q: It definitely doesn't look right, it's too thick.
Me: Gee, thanks for pointing that out, now I'm going to have to take it off and make it smaller somehow. Here look at the book. The first panel has a thicker vine than the rest. It won't matter if they are different, they weren't perfectionists in those days you know. I really need it to be 3/8" wide but they don't make a bias tape maker that wide and I've got too lazy to use my bias bars and do it on the machine.

At this stage, I pull off that offending thick vine and press one side open, refold one edge in closer, baste it back on and call it done.

Mr Q: That looks better.
Me: You know too much I'm thinking but actually say, thanks, you were right, I really appreciate you pointing that out, it really needs a 3/8" vine. Now I'm happier with it.
MrQ: I've just been on the Internet and did you know that Clover now make a 3/8" bias tape maker, I think you should order one.
I got another block done for the Cherry Trees quilt over Christmas. Still loving the fabrics.

He knows what bias tape is? And the sizes available to order from Clover? Keep that man! Better yet, hand him a needle and thread.

Haha -- gotta love a hubby who tells you to go buy a new quilting gadget! That quilt is gorgeous. And so is the Cherry Tree block -- those fabrics and colors are beautiful. I can see we're going to be in for another big year of Quiltsalott inspiration!

My husband and your husband should be BFFs! You gotta love it. Mine reads my blog so I have not ever posted his "suggestions" on my blog. LOL. It looks great. Have fun with it. I do like having containers for my projects. It keeps everything together.

I'm glad you were able to fix that vine so easily! Your hubby really is tuned into the whole quilting lark, isn't he? Good for him (and you).

Love that exchange between you and your husband. Your husband and mine ought to get together to chat quilting. :)

You are an energizer bunny, Janet. Always love to see your work.

Oh, that made me laugh. My own true love offers helpful advice sometimes, too -- and he is almost always right. Now, how annoying is that? The vine quilt is a stunner!

Janet, thanks for making me smile :). Your work is amazing, can't wait to see both of these projects as they develop. Thanks for such great inspiration!

Don't they love to put their 2 cents worth in...and most times they are right..
I think deep down you would not have been happy till it was perfect.

How observant of Mr. T. If I fell of the planet mine probably wouldn't notice until tea time let alone that a bit of sewing was slightly off line. I wonder if you fancy swapping!!! The vines are just going to be amazing and I love the red and green block.

At time I dare ask Mr. Creations "what do you think" and he offers his honest opinion. I hate it when he's right! All I know is this quilt, like all the others, is amazing. I LOVE the Cherry Tree block.

Can't go wrong when the DH wants you to order a gadget! It's only natural that they want to be a little involved in something that we are passionate about!

Love the Cherry Tree block!

Ok, now I'm going to hang my quilty head in shame....a man actually knew that there was a 3/8th" bias maker before I did LOL. Now Clover needs to come out with a 1/8th" one. It is nice that he felt comfortable giving his opinion, it's just hard to take when they are right ROFL. The Cherry Tree block is wonderful and I'm excited that you have gone back to the vine project :0)

Janet I too have the pattern for the leaf quilt and I have been trying to finish up projects so I can get it started. I received a ruler for Christmas that makes leaves so I am going to see if it will work for this quilt. Funny how we think our husbands don't pay attention to our quilting projects.

Oh Janet you had me chuckling this morning...lol...your hubby is a "keeper" for sure!!! I am thrilled that you have the Vines quilt out again. It's one of my all time favorites!!!

Love the new Cherry Trees block...I like the fresh and light approach you are taking with your reds and greens.

You are so inspiring. I love to read your blog.
You must never sleep to get so much done.
I love your interpretation of Cherry Trees. What are you using for your background. I need to get mine so I can start but can't seem to make up my mind about what I want.

I was just thinking about your vines quilt the other day. I'm so happy to see you're working on it again.
Isn't it funny how our men learn the terms and can hold an intellegent convo about quilts?
I didn't know there was a 3/8" bias maker either..but it will be on my shopping list.

I love your BTCT block. The fabrics you're using give it a fun feeling. :)

Seems he might have redeemed himself with that you should order one comment :)

Janet,
I bought that book with the intention of making that quilt! Looking at your project I am once again thinking of revisiting the idea. Oh.. I had some laugh reading Mr.Q's input and I might add, pretty impressive!
Love d the post! Thanks for the smiles!

Clover makes a 3/8 bias tape maker? How did I not know that and Mr. Q did? You'll need it for the Cherry Tree quilt, too. I'll have to go on a search today.

I love your block in the modern fabrics, especially the polka dots - I love polka dots. And your vine quilt is fabulous! I enjoy seeing what you're working on. Your work is always beautiful!!!

Oh that conversation was so fun. Mark would never care how anything looks! And my first thought was "I thought I had a 3/8" tape maker - really? they don't make one?"

But then I read further and found out you found that out too! Let me know if you need one.

Love your story about the bias tape stem. I think he is a keeper. Also, LOVE your Cherry Tree block. It is so fresh looking.

It is so funny how some of our husbands will give their ideas about our quilts. Go get that clover maker. lol
I just love the new Cherry Tree block.

I have the perfect solution, Janet. Tell Mr. QAL that the only place where the 3/8" bias tape maker is available is in Hawaii and because he suggested that you need one...well, you know the rest of the story.

Be sure to post a picture of you, MR. QAL and your bias tape maker sitting on the beach in Waikiki! Tee hee!

Give Mr. Q a hug from me! My DH is ever supportive, but notices nothing. On showing a finished applique top to some friends who were over for a sewing day, he walked past and said, "I like that. Who made it?"

I love the Cherry Tree block and the fabrics, they call my name

Karen said...

LOL! At least you know your husband pays attention to what you are working on. I have all the sizes of Clover bias tape makers. I never had much luck using the bias bars.

Your Cherry Tree block is a good one. I like the red leaves.

Wow--great husband (can he give mine lessons?!) Your cherry tree blocks are great--love the colors your using and the modern feel of it.

I love that Susan McCord quilt!! It's mindboggling that the leaves are all pieced. Love your conversation with Mr Q. I bought a bias maker recently, I was in Spotlight looking everywhere for them when GBF found it, so now he keeps asking if I've used it. He likes the gadgets that go with sewing.

LOL! You've got an "enabler" on your hands...not exactly a bad thing when you need (want) new fabrics, tools, notions, etc, for quilting! LOVE your block and the vine quilt.
