Collaborating with Kathie

Have you seen Kathie's Summer Salsa quilt ? It's just been published in the latest American Patchwork and Quilting magazine.
When Kathie started talking about making a yellow and red quilt last year, I wanted to join in and she gave me permission to make my version.. These are my two favourite colours after all. Of course I've had to keep it hush hush until hers was published but now I can show you mine. It's still a top and yet to be quilted.
My layout is a little different in the center and I chose to use scraps for the nine patches.
Now have a look at this photo below and you can see a big piecing mistake. This is why I need those labled pins people. I go all dyslexic somewhere between the blocks getting off the wall to under the machine and back on the wall. Not to worry, it was easily fixed.
I just loved using this chrome yellow, it's pure sunshine.

I love that quilt. That's the one I marked as soon as I got my magazine..
BUT...I kind of like your second one best...it's kind of funky..

Oops! That is a big piecing mistake. Am I correct in assuming you had to do a little re-sewing? Both yours and Kathie's quilts look great.

You ended up with a very good quilt. I had to chuckle at your error in putting the red in the wrong place. I think it can be an easy mistake than any of us can have happen.

I love your quilt -- with and without the mistake! Sometimes quirky mistakes add such character!!

I was reading the magazine earlier at the quilt shop and loved this quilt. Now that I have seen yours, I like this version even better.

MJinMichigan said...

Janet I love both quilts.
Your pins were a great idea and I've already made myself a set. They will work much better than the paper labels I usually use.
Thanks for sharing the idea.

Fantastic Janet!!! The chrome yellow and red make a fantastic quilt!
Sorry about the oops...there's no hiding that one!! LOL

Well, even with a piecing mistake, it's still gorgeous! I love the colors and all the nine patches - beautiful!!!

Nyla said...

I did see and love Kathie's quilt. I must say, I love your scrap version and your layout! Aren't nine patch quilts just wonderful?! Thanks for the inspiration!

Love your quilt Janet, the red and yellow are so comlementary. Will have to add this to my must make list. A great stashbuster. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful! Glad it was a quick fix. I am amazed at my own ability to mix up blocks sometimes...

Such a great color combo. My grandmother's kitchen used to be yellow and red. Another gorgeous quilt from you.

Darlene said...

Love it, Janet!!!! I'm glad you make those piecing mistakes, too. :-)

ha! gotta say, i love your oopsie! I would have gone for that! ;-) it's a beauty either way!

It's a yummy quilt. Those are colors I would never have thought of putting together, but they're a great effect.

Wish you and I were closer. I'd love to show you the "web" method of joining quilt blocks in columns and rows that I teach in my quilting classes. It's a great way to ensure none of the blocks get mixed up. No running back and forth from the design wall to the sewing machine.

Beautiful Janet!! Love your Summer Salsa quilt! I love red and yellow together also. One of my friends told me you need a little something yellow in every room of your house for a little sunshine. I'm glad I'm not the only one who makes those mistakes.

Red and yellow--always a happy combination. Scrappy is best in my book! What a great quilt design. I like the setting so much! Hope to see it quilted someday :)

Janet said...

I love it - especially with scrappy nine patches. How are you planning on quilting it? I smiled at your piecing mistake - I've done that too :0)

I love it, Janet! I'm not a *yellow* person, but lately I've seen a number of quilts featuring it and I'm coming around...quickly!

This quilt is so beautiful! I love it! You are giving me some inspiration for what to do with some 60-odd nine patches I have sitting around collecting dust. Your layout is divine.

Dixie Howard said...

Wow Janet - its just wonderful! Your version turned out fantastic. How fun to make your own version along with Kathie. You know I'm a yellow and red girl too. Its such a happy combo.

Ooooo your quilt is beautiful!! I was looking so hard to find the goof (which I never seem to be able to find when someone makes an error) and here you had fixed it already LOL. I was excited to see Kathie's quilt in the magazine :0)

It's a beauty!! I have to laugh since I do the same thing. There is something mysterious that happens between the design wall and the sewing machine. LOL What will you do with it when it's finished?

MARCIE said...

I LOVE your scrappy version! Good job to both you and Kathie!

Brandie said...

It really is pure sunshine. I love it!

alobsiger said...

Your version is wonderful, Janet! Always an admirer of red and chrome yellow! I was lingering in this section at a quilt shop just the other day. I got a fun bubbly stripe with some black and green. It's so easy to get a block turned on the way to the machine. I am regularly going back to the laid out blocks to doublecheck myself. I need to mark some pins like yours!

Anne Ida said...

Gorgeous quilt! I love it! And that chrome yellow really zings ;o)

Browndirtcottage said...

Oh Janet...I'm 'swooning' over this one...great colors.....LOL...you know....it is less than 3 ft from my design wall to my machine...in fact...I usually just swirl around in my chair....but like Victoria says...I can sure forget where I'm at in that short a distance!!!

Anonymous said...

At least you spotted it before the quilt was finished - I once spotted a block the wrong way round in a quilt when I was taking the final photos .....

Dolly said...

Yep, mmmmmmm, that's more than a simple, just-overlook-it mistake !

It's funny, because I searched the FIRST photo looking for the mistake, and I was going to tell you that you fixed it for nothing, because I could find nothing wrong ! Then I saw the second shot and laughed. In our little group of quilters, the Outlaws, we have one DEAR friend whom we all call "Flip", because she almost never finishes anything without finding a glaring flipped block or section.
