Wild with a dash of mild

I have to show you these awesome fun letters my DD made for little miss nearly four years old. She's learning her letters and I think some numbers may follow as well as a bag to hold them in. You can find the tutorial here. Great gift idea! They only took a day to do, even better.
I visited a new quilt shop last week and picked up a few brights and Kaffes, luscious colours.
They could come in handy for the Sue Ross bom I've joined from MO. I joined the pretty but I'm doing a second set in bright contemporary out of my own stash.
The instructions said to hand piece the last set in seams but I partial pieced the seam you can see below which made joining them a cinch.
This is the block 2, wild version. I think I might starch the fabrics for the mild block to make all those bias edges behave.
Block 1 and 2, wild.
OK, this block was looooong in the making, things weren't fitting. Never mind, we have the fudge factor and darn it, I was going to make it fit. I managed to get it all pinned up when I noticed spare parts, you know like putting furniture together and finding extra screws at the end.
See the spare parts on the right?
I had a good laugh over that one but all's well that ends well and I now have a not quite perfect but acceptable mild block.
This type of colour and fabric scheme is right out of my comfort zone but I did want to work with them as a way of learning how these fabrics look together.
Stay tuned for another bright post next time, it must be spring!

  4. I've been reading other's comments on block #2 as they have been trying to put them together and I think everyone is feeling challenged! They sure will look stunning once all the blocks are side by side.

  11. Okay, you've made up my mind for me. I'm going to have to make a bright set as well as my "pretty" set of blocks. I think your blocks all look perfect!

It's strange that you're ready for brights because of Spring and I'm ready for dark warm colors because of Fall...lol

  13. Look at all of the terrific colors in your post, Janet! Thanks for the eye candy! You have some of my FAVORITES-- like pastel Roman Glass. And I'm a huge fan of the grey coleus. LOVE your practice BOM block too. Oh, how much fun! Your DD's letters are also fantastic!

  16. I almost joined this group, but because of scheduling conflicts I decided I better wait. Your blocks are nice but I must admit, I'm partial to the high contrast ones. Thank you for sharing.

  17. Those blocks sure do look like they'd be a challenge, Janet.

The fabrics you chose are indeed a walk on the wild side but I always suspected that of you. (wink) Just kidding, of course. They're gorgeous!

  18. I found your blog a couple of days ago by clicking random links in blogs.

I was instantly smitten with the quilt in your header so I started reading your blog hoping for clues to the pattern and was very sad to see it was something you made up yourself, so now pattern.

I have spent the past two days reading your blog, all the way back to the beginning. You are so talented and I have loved seeing all of your creations.

Thanks for the applique tutorials. I have taken a beginners class and am ready for my first project, any pattern recommendations for a beginner?

  19. Ohmygosh -- I LOVE that second block. I'm sorry, I know you told me what it's called (or where the pattern might be?) -- will you tell me again? I promise to take notes this time!

Your blocks are fabulous. I am glad to see I am not the only one that makes mistakes. lol

  23. Love your BOM's...I tend to lean towards the wild block colors, but they are fabulous...block 1 looks VERY intimidating though!

  24. Had to laugh at your "spare parts". The block is very challenging. I must admit that I would not have chosen those fabrics but they work so well in the block. Teaches us not to be afraid to try new things in our quilting.
