This is Scrappy Bargello, one of Bonnie's great free patterns but with bigger squares. I love it, I could make this pattern again and again. This is a big quilt made in a hurry last year to put on our bed.
This lap quilt was made from a kit from Material Obsession. I had to get my head around the piecing sequence of this one. I don't usually like the oriental prints but these ones are from Japan, called Naomi . Beautiful quality.
I still use a lap hoop, keeping the quilt loose in it and a #5 embroidery needle. I need a rubber finger on my index finger to help pull the needle through.
In big stitch quilting, the stitches are 1/8" up to 1/4" long. Try it if you haven't already, it really suits some quilts, especially scrappy or bright ones.

I will try this, since I can't seem to get the hang of "little" stitching, but I really want to get into some hand quilting! Thanks for the info! ~ Jennie
Your Scrappy Bargello is just fabulous - where do you get such beautiful fabrics? I really do need a trip to the east coast! Big stitch quilting - I'm a real fan - just love it!

Two more beautiful quilts!! I have never tried big stich quilting - although maybe my attempts at regular hand quilting would qualify... :0)
I LOVE your scrappy bargello...what a happy fabric selection! I've been wanting to try that big stitch quilting. I just need to fins the right project for it.
oh I do love the scrappy prettiness of these quilts and your hand quilting is beautiful. I'm looking forward to the colder weather so that I may lay my quilts on my lap and enjoy quilting them again :-)
Love the Bargello...never made one of these as yet...I am also a fan of the big stitching...so much quicker..Great Quilts.
cheers
These are just stunning! I especially love the look of the variegated thread with the big stitch quilting.
Wonderful big stitch quilts. I am going to give it a try. You can also use a crochet cotton, such as DMC Cebelia 100% crochet cotton, #10, 50g
Both of those quilts are beautiful, as are all of the quilts you have shared with us here in blogland. However, I especially love your applique quilts / blocks. Your applique work is awesome! After looking at your quilts done with the big stitch, I have a question regarding your hand quilting. How do you mark the quilt for hand quilting? What kind of marking pencil, or pen, do you use? I'm just curious, as I seem to be on a never-ending quest to find the "perfect" marking pencil. Thank you in advance for answering my question. Happy Quilting! Jay (in cold, windy, snowy NY State, USA)

I've done big stitch with six strand DMC embroidery floss, but what size perle is best for big stitch? I went to buy some recently and found there were two sizes to choose from?? Thx!
