It's been ages

We've been having major Internet issues here, it seems there was a voltage leak up the road that kept making the Internet drop out and go ultra slow. I'm sorry if you missed my posts but hopefully I can update more regularly now. I sure have missed visiting my favourite blogs.

I have been fabric bombing in the sewing cave, it seems I can't play with fabric in a tidier fashion and there's no point in folding it neatly until I'm done with it anyway.
I've been keeping myself busy with a ton of drawing. I had an idea for a quilt and spent a lot of time on that.
I even shopped for Japanese fabrics for it. I proceeded to hand piece one compass and then abandoned the whole project.
At some stage I came to my senses and decided not to start something new. Guilt made me pull out an old sleeping beauty that has to be finished or it might end up never being done.
I did draw some borders for the old Baltimore quilt which I showed back here. I knew I wasn't that happy with them and so I put pencil to paper and started again. It took days which is why I put it off.
This time I used one of Sue Garman's urns from her Friendship album with some adjustments and drew the floral arrangement using some of the flowers in the quilt.
Once the drawings were finished it was time to start colouring with fabric.
Here's a peek of the first section. The corners have to be done last after they are mitred and joined to the top plus I have some embroidered stems to do as I go. I've left plenty of space to do some quilted feathers later on which I'll most likely trapunto.
I'll be back next time with an update on how I'm going on my other applique project, the mighty Auntie Green.

Happy sewing, Janet

I think you've made a lovely start on your border. I particularly like your roses. Looking forward to seeing your other quilt.

Janet, that is absolutely beautiful. The border urn and flowers were a great choice.

That border looks stunning, as usual, Janet! And good for you for resisting the urge to start something new- although I love the look of your Mariner's Compass! Would paper piecing make it come together more quickly? Seems a shame to abandon it.....

Maybe you will come back to that project, such a beautiful selection of fabrics. The appliqué on your Baltimore is amazing.

I LOVE your border start - it looks incredible! With trapunto feathers - WOW! The roses are beautiful and the urn too is fabulous.
Your compass project looks intriguing on paper - are you sure its abandoned?
I'm so glad your Internet is working properly again :0) You were missed. I can't wait to see your Auntie Green progress.

You are the queen of applique. It looks amazing. I hope you haven't abandoned your mariners compass project forever and have only just put it off. That too would be an amazing quilt. Glad you're back.x

Janet, your border is magnificent! The roses in the urn are perfect! I have a very similar Baltimore album top that has been abandoned. It took me years to finish the top! I am very proud of you for working on a quilt in progress...that is what I should be doing.

You have been missed. Happy to catch up on what you've been up to. You are crazy good. Stunning applique and I also love what you've drawn for the Japanese fabric. I'm sure if you abandoned it, it wasn't singing to you.

What a treat to wake up this morning and see you here. I enjoyed reading about your fabric bombing! :) you're so fun. It's also interesting to read about your overall project choices, new and UFO's. That age old struggle we go through. You mean you start something new, have it all planned, buy the fabric then...nope! Something we can all relate to no matter what level of quilter we are.

Your urn is scrumptious. The colors so rich and joyful.

Karen said...

Happy to see you back. You are such an inspiration to me, your border is so gorgeous. The colors are so rich, are the fabrics hand dyed?

so very pretty I always love your work. The fabric that you show I love and I am using similiar for my Love Entwined quilt. I am guessing they are Japanese Taupe as they look like mine.

The fabrics you used for the roses are just fabulous. What a lovely urn of flowers.

I am so glad you came back to the Baltimore Album, I love long border vines spilling out of a vase. You are so close to finishing this now that the border is coming together. These long projects of ours... There is a shop here in America (Homestead Hearth) that is starting Auntie Green's Garden as a block of the month starting in Dec. I have signed up! I have always admired that quilt also.
Happy Stitching Janet

Fabric bombing - I didn't know there was a word for it, but SO appropriate. It's how I work too. Your border is beautiful - well worth the time & effort. Welcome back!

the pen/pencil you are using to mark with shows up so clearly! will it wash out? if so, would you tell me what it is? if not, how do you plan to cover it?

We had internet issues for about a month, so I know exactly how you feel. Very frustrating to not be able to communicate. And your Baltimore is beautiful!

I enjoyed seeing those fabric piles, my room gets like that too. Your quilt idea with those japanese taupes would be so beautiful. I hope it hasn't been abandoned altogether but just put in the queue. Your Baltimore quilt is amazing, I love your progress shots of your drawings. I'm always amazed at your ability to pick the right shade of fabric to bring those flowers and leaves to life.

Thank you for sharing that you also struggle with design, redesign and other quilt projects. It takes time to do all aspects of quiltmaking.

Oh. My. Gosh. It's gorgeous Janet! I LOVE that border. Are you going to repeat the same border on all the sides? Or do something different? It's so nice to see you back too!

Your border sketches are amazing and it looks even more stunning in fabric. So glad to see your Baltimore again.

PS. You are not the only one with the need for a "fabric bomb" to get fabric choices right. Lol

Oh, your urn border is so beautiful...love the roses with the blue of the urn...stunning. I know what you mean about working on older stuff...I am trying to finish the hand quilting of my music quilt and finish designing the remaining music blocks. But I am pulled by anniversary dates that make me feel like designing...bad, bad, bad! Your Baltimore will be so amazing when done...you are wise to push through it!

In stitches,
Teresa :o)

That border is going to be stunning. I'm trying to decide what to do with the borders of my Candied Hexagon quilt.

I too have been silent on the blog and flitting from project o project. But I'll be back to posting one day soon.
