A wee bit of fun

I did say I had taken a little detour from what I normally sew and I had a need for something fast. My poor stitching pillow which I use when I'm hand piecing or appliqueing has seen better days. It looks so shabby that I'm ashamed to show it. Time for a new one.
I found a great tutorial at Cluck Cluck Sew here. It's called a sprocket pillow and wow, it is fast, easy and fun. Only trouble is that I put the text fabric on wrong way round.
I was always put off making a round pillow when it doesn't have an opening for an insert. How do you wash them? I really need to know and just in case I have to put the whole thing in the wash, I used a large self covered button that is all plastic because metal would probably rust.
The back looks as fun as the front with an old  Auntie Cookie linen I had in the stash. Now the text fabric on the side is the right way up. Honestly, I have more trouble choosing fabrics for wee things like pillows, bags and pouches than I do for quilts. I made the 14 inch version.
There was one big glitch after I made this, it's too thick for to stitch with on my lap and I prefer a square shape so I'll just wait until the urge to make another pillow comes along.
I recently bought a small book from Pam Holland called The Adventures Of The Amazing Alphabet. It's a great book to read to little ones plus it has all the instructions and patterns for doing each letter of the alphabet.

Well, what letter should I choose but the "J" for my name. I just happened to find the Fabrico pens I needed on sale, I love it when that happens. Tracing and colouring it in was like going back to my childhood. Now what to do with it. It could be a wall hanging, the front of a tote or bag of some sort or maybe a pillow front for that square one I need.
Until next time, Janet

  11. A lady of many talents! It's fun to deviate from the "norm". What fun prints on your pillow and well...I heart dots and a round pillow is a dot, right? Your "J" is fabulous.

  13. Your pillow is wonderful -- I'm sorry you don't like it for stitching. I love the idea of a stitching pillow though!

Like you, I want a zipper in my pillows. For a round pillow, I would put the zipper around the edge (where you have the text fabric). Although, with that design, the button presents a problem -- I guess you could just cut it off and re-attach it each time you wash it -- a small price to pay for a clean pillow, I suppose LOL. Now, you'll have to make a square pillow -- I can't wait to see it!

Oh, and I love your letter J. I'm not familiar with Pam Holland's work -- as usual, I learn something new every time I stop by here. Thanks!

  14. I had the honor of hosting Pam in my home when she was in the midst of writing her Alphabet book, and she gave me several pages as gifts. How I treasure them!

  16. Hey! I like the Janet the Juggler. Does it stand for juggling projects? I like the pillow, you could always do the border around the circle in two sections and insert a zip into the middle. Not sure i have explained that well. Will find you a picture.

  18. I thought it was a pillow for sitting on, as that is what struck me initially. I need something that gives me a boost and takes the pressure off my bum. I have a padded office chair for my sewing room, but if I'm being honest I've probably sat in it quilting for way longer than it was ever intended to be sat in. Will have to make one!

  20. Your pillow is adorable! How fun that you made it with such colorful prints. They're perfect. You're so smart to think about rust from a metal button, if you wash it. That Pam Holland is a talent, isn't she? I was happy to have spent time with her the last time I was in Sydney. She videotaped two friends and me for a program, but I don't think it ever aired. You've shared good stuff in this post, Janet. Yes, I'd stay this is "a wee bit of fun."

  22. I love the cushion but I also prefer a square cushion when I'm hand sewing - mine has a velveteen back which is perfect! I keep meaning to make a new one but get distracted by quilts...

Love the colouring in - looks like fun!
