Quilter down!

On Tuesday I had a nasty accident and got to take a chauffeur driven ride in one of these. I even had my own personal paramedic to administer some doses of morphine.
Let me start at the beginning. I had been cleaning the inserts from my range hood which are now a bit singed. I was pouring boiling water over them and the fat was coming out quite nicely.
DH bought in a can of highly flammable de-greasing spray. See where this is going? It was working so brilliantly and the fat was literally running out. Then I made a huge mistake.
I picked one of these to have a little scrub.
There was an explosive flash fire caused by the friction of the brush. I was thrown about three meters across the kitchen floor from the force and landed flat on my back. When I looked up I saw a fire like this about a meter and a half wide by a meter high. I'm sure glad I had aluminium venetian blinds and not fabric curtains.
I checked my clothes weren't on fire and raced into the bathroom to submerge my arm in a sink full of cold water. I had a soaked towel on my face as well. Dh managed to smother the fire and an ambulance was called. Luckily he wasn't injured.
It took about twenty minutes to arrive which was a good thing since the water submersion was the best thing for me.
My arm which copped the worst was dressed and the next day I had an appointment here.
I go back tomorrow for fresh dressings and then again early next week. So what's the damage?
My arm hurts, a LOT, is swollen and I can't sew but the painkillers are good stuff.
First and second degree burns which should heal quite fast with silver dressings. One patch near my elbow with a patch of skin missing.
My eyelashes are a third of the length they were, my eyebrows have short hairs and I have no hair on my upper lip.
My hair burnt off all around the edges of my face.
The tip of my nose is feeling sun burnt.
I'm thanking God for the fact that it could have been so much worse. I'm one very, very lucky person!
I did get a bonus, I got to visit the Ikea store near the burns unit and found some bargains. I thought this would make a great table cloth.
This one excited me, I first saw it on a quilt here so I bought eleven meters, enough for a backing. It was such a good price at $3.99 meter.
Pardon me if I don't blog for a little bit or answer emails. It's taken me a long time to write this post.
DH is on holidays so I'm being well looked after. I'll hopefully be able to catch up soon.

  1. So glad that your burns were not any worse. My grandson got burned by steam on his hand when he was a toddler and burns are serious. Please do as your doctor instructs we don't want to hear about any infections, etc. Hope your pain meds are helping and that you get back to feeling better soon! You are so lucky, it must have been very scary.

  2. wow! glad you're as well off as you seem to be. hope you get back up to speed soon!!

  3. WOW! Glad to hear you weren't hurt more seriously. Burns can be quite nasty. Keep up with wound care. It does make a difference! I had to chuckle that you got a trip to IKEA out of this misadventure. Nothing like a little retail fiber therapy to make us happy. Don't bother to respond to this. When I broke my wrist last year it took forever to type anything - I understand. Hope you heal quickly!

  4. Janet, how scary!! So glad all is well though. Praying for quick healing for you!!! Get lots of rest and take care of your arm and face!!

  6. Janet, what a trooper you are! Burned, singed and drugged up, you still managed to check out the nearby Ikea fabric department while in the neighborhood. A true quilter of my own heart. lol
Seriously, how frightening! Sounds like you were very lucky to have escaped more serious injury. Wishing you a smooth recovery. Don't worry...the quilts will be waiting for you when you're back in form.

  7. Holy moly! You must have a guardian angel! Keep that silver cream on there and re-dress it as often as you can - the more contact you have with the cream, the faster it'll heal - you'll be amazed at how well it works! (yep - that's experience talking...) Hope you also have some pain meds? Get better soon!

  12. Dear Janet, so glad you are ok and hope you get well quickly. I was shuddering through your post, as I was literally doing the same thing on Saturday, and my husband was spraying the hood with the same type of stuff. Thank you for passing on this cautionary post as I will never attempt this again. Back to my vinegar and water and elbow grease for cleaning...

  13. Good heavens! Thank goodness you are ok! It sounds horrible--especially not being able to sew! Although not having hair on the upper lip would be a plus for me, a trip to the hospital seems an expensive way to eliminate that. :)
Hope you heal swiftly and well--we'll all miss you!

  17. What a dreadful accident, Janet. I'm so sorry you have all that pain, and really hope it can be kept under control while the healing takes place (hopefully soon). At least you proved yourself a REAL quilter by not missing the opportunity for some fabric shopping LOL. I guess it was "for medicinal purposes".

You are a true quilter - after going through all that and Still looking at fabric:o) You are a trooper!

  26. OMG! What terrible news. I'm glad to hear you were not more seriously injured. Because by the sound of it, it could have been much much worse. Here's hoping you heal quickly and with no lasting after effects.

And as a side note...the next time you want to remove unwanted hair there are much easier ways to remove it that aren't quite as dangerous. I can't say they hurt any less though LOL.

  27. Good grief! What an accident! I'll say you were fortunate! You poor dear. I can only imagine how painful your burn must feel. You've just taught us all that housekeeping can be very bad for your health! Do take care of yourself. Heal quickly. I will pray for you. And do not reply to this comment!

  29. Oh Janet, I am glad you can see that you were very lucky, I like to look on the bright side too. I feel sad that you are in pain and unable to craft (which, to me, would be the worst of the injury, not the pain). Sounds like you are being looked after. I look forward to your posts when you are feeling better. Kelli

  38. Oh, Janet, I am so concerned for you. I know burns hurt worse than almost any injury. Know that I am sending prayers your way daily. Of course, we understand if you need time off for a while to heal. You will be very much missed.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thank goodness you are OK--could of even hurt your back in the fall to the floor. Take care of your arm, and follow the doctor's directions so you will heal properly!! While you wait to heal, you will have to design some quilts in your head. Of course with something nice to drink and your feet propped up--and no cleaning. Hope the meds continue to take away the pain. God Bless

  40. Ohhh that smarts, now next time you need to clean........take out inserts, immerse in hot water in bath and cover with laundry detergent. This is from a book written by Shannon Lush full of cleaning tips. I have used this method, it works. Laundry detergent is formulated to lift grease, so much safer and cleaner than the previous method. Then drain bath water, stand up inserts, and rinse with more hot water, leave to air dry
    Relx and get better.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Janet, you had quite a scare! Please be kind to yourself, and let yourself be helped. I hope you will heal quickly.

  47. Ouch! So sorry this happened to you but pleased I am not the only one this sort of thing happens to. I put soup into the blender and didn't put the lid on properly. Burnt boobs as well as arms. BTW pop the air filters into the dishwasher next time....

    ReplyDelete
  48. My sympathies, and I am sure you are going to get the full gist of this burn over the next couple of days. Rest up and I also want to say a big thanks for sharing this as it is simple household accidents like these that can be so devastating and we all need a reminder from time to time. I wouldn't have given it another thought about picking up that brush myself.

  51. Oh no, you poor thing. I think burns are the worst of injuries as they really hurt the most. Just a little burn can hurt like h...!!! Take some time out and look after yourself.
PS: note to self, do not clean, it's dangerous ;)!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Oh my goodness, you poor thing! (And yet very lucky that it's not worse.) Take care xx P.S. Maybe your hubby will do all the cleaning from now on?! It's worth a go!!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Oh my word! How awful! Burns are very painful, hope you can keep it under control with good painmedication.
Next time, just use some soda with soft soap, that cleans very well and isn't flammable.
Hope you recover swiftly. Let your hubby pamper you (only upside?)

  64. Well I won't accuse you of staging a fire just so you could go to the IKEA store. No one wants to suffer burns or a scare such as that. Scary stuff. I know you'll be take good care of. Now you can spend some time thumbing through magazines and books and dreaming up new and gorgeous applique designs. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Thanks for sharing the lesson on how NOT to clean the grease filter!

  67. Oh my goodness Janet - what an ordeal! I had a similar incident years ago attempting to light the pilot light of an industrial gas stove so I feel for you. It will be a challenge not to be able to sew for a while but take the time to recover. In the interim, it looks like fabric therapy is helping to improve your spirits. Stay well.

  68. Oh Janet. I'm just waking up and my heart is racing! I'm so glad you're okay. You're right - it could have been so much worse. 71. Oh my, so glad you are OK but having suffered bad burn to my hand a few years ago, I know that you must be in terrible pain. Only a dedicated quilter would think a trip to a burn unit was another opportunity for fabric shopping close by! Take care.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I am sorry for your accident truly but I had to laugh because even when the quilter is down she can go shopping for fabric...or the likes.

  81. HOLY FREAKIN'COW!!!!! I'm so glad you are still around! Yes, I'm sure it could have been a lot worse, BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE IT WAS, AND IS, BAD ENOUGH! I always suspected housework was a killer. All I have to say is that those meds MUST be good...I was crying then totally cracked up when you talked about going to IKEA and finding something FABRIC-oriented! That's the MEDS talking! Take it easy and be patient, and NO MORE HOUSEWORK!!! I don't know what to swear off and avoid first...grease, boiling water, scrub brushes, housework...ALL the above?!?

I will keep you in my thoughts!

    In stitches,

  125. So thankful it was not worse for you. Love how you made some fun at Ikea during the whole injury repair...what a trooper you are. I had no idea that a plastic brush could ignite a degreaser spray,WOW
!!! Hopefully you will heal quickly and the pain meds keep you feeling bearable.

  126. Far Out Brussel Sprout!!! That is one hell of a story!! It's crazy because you had no way of knowing that would happen. I am SO glad you are mostly okay, it could have been worse. I hope everything heals up super fast so you can get back to sewing soon. You could always start doing quilting podcasts if you get bored. Take care Janet.

  130. Oh no! I'm so glad to hear that you got off relatively lightly. That arm sounds painful though, so a pity you didn't get off lighter still.

Is it just me, or is someone making a degreaser that's highly flammable a really stupid idea? I mean, sheesh, it didn't even take a spark, just some friction heat.

    I hope you heal quickly.

  131. Oh my gosh!!!! Who would think that would happen? Good to know I guess. I'm so sorry. Oh my dear. Janet take care and heal well. I'm so sorry.

  132. Oh my!!! I am a scrubber so I probably would have done the same thing. Glad you shared your story with us.

My husband is a paramedic and he is kind of nice to have around.

I am thankful you are safe, that your husband was with you, and you acted fast until the medics arrived.

    Get well soon.

  133. I am just catching up with my blog reading so am late in reading about this---I am so sorry to hear about your accident!

This is something I never would have imagined happening and will note it (and the cleaning tips others have shared) as I had hoped to get a range hood in the future.

Hope you are healing nicely. Take care of yourself first, the blog can wait and you know we will all be here or you when you come back!

  142. OMG, I never would have thought a plastic scrubber would cause enough friction to cause a spark. So glad you're safe but I'm sure hurting. I've warned DH about the degreaser because he uses it on his car.

  143. Oh my gosh Janet, what a terrible experience and how lucky you were not to be more seriously hurt. I hope you recover fully, you have really highlighted how something so simple as cleaning your stove/rangehood can turn into a dangerous situation. All the best Janet, kind regards, Ann
