Have you seen Kathie's Summer Salsa quilt ? It's just been published in the latest American Patchwork and Quilting magazine.
When Kathie started talking about making a yellow and red quilt last year, I wanted to join in and she gave me permission to make my version.. These are my two favourite colours after all. Of course I've had to keep it hush hush until hers was published but now I can show you mine. It's still a top and yet to be quilted.
My layout is a little different in the center and I chose to use scraps for the nine patches.
Now have a look at this photo below and you can see a big piecing mistake. This is why I need those labled pins people. I go all dyslexic somewhere between the blocks getting off the wall to under the machine and back on the wall. Not to worry, it was easily fixed.
I just loved using this chrome yellow, it's pure sunshine.
I love that quilt. That's the one I marked as soon as I got my magazine..
ReplyDeleteBUT...I kind of like your second one best...it's kind of funky..
Oops! That is a big piecing mistake. Am I correct in assuming you had to do a little re-sewing? Both yours and Kathie's quilts look great.
ReplyDeleteYou ended up with a very good quilt. I had to chuckle at your error in putting the red in the wrong place. I think it can be an easy mistake than any of us can have happen.
ReplyDeleteI love your quilt -- with and without the mistake! Sometimes quirky mistakes add such character!!
ReplyDeleteI was reading the magazine earlier at the quilt shop and loved this quilt. Now that I have seen yours, I like this version even better.
ReplyDeleteJanet I love both quilts.
ReplyDeleteYour pins were a great idea and I've already made myself a set. They will work much better than the paper labels I usually use.
Thanks for sharing the idea.
Fantastic Janet!!! The chrome yellow and red make a fantastic quilt!
ReplyDeleteSorry about the oops...there's no hiding that one!! LOL
Well, even with a piecing mistake, it's still gorgeous! I love the colors and all the nine patches - beautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteI did see and love Kathie's quilt. I must say, I love your scrap version and your layout! Aren't nine patch quilts just wonderful?! Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteLove your quilt Janet, the red and yellow are so comlementary. Will have to add this to my must make list. A great stashbuster. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Glad it was a quick fix. I am amazed at my own ability to mix up blocks sometimes...
ReplyDeleteSuch a great color combo. My grandmother's kitchen used to be yellow and red. Another gorgeous quilt from you.
ReplyDeleteLove it, Janet!!!! I'm glad you make those piecing mistakes, too. :-)
ReplyDeleteha! gotta say, i love your oopsie! I would have gone for that! ;-) it's a beauty either way!
ReplyDeleteIt's a yummy quilt. Those are colors I would never have thought of putting together, but they're a great effect.
ReplyDeleteWish you and I were closer. I'd love to show you the "web" method of joining quilt blocks in columns and rows that I teach in my quilting classes. It's a great way to ensure none of the blocks get mixed up. No running back and forth from the design wall to the sewing machine.
So bright and beautiful....
ReplyDeleteGreat work.

The latest edition of AP&Q is something else! So many great features, the Salsa quilt being one of them.
ReplyDeleteVery striking quilt Janet and it's a famous one too. I haven't got my copy of APQ yet. Can't wait to see Kathie's quilt. I love yellow and red too. I might to make one when I get my copy - Thanks for sharing - Hugs Nat
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Janet!! Love your Summer Salsa quilt! I love red and yellow together also. One of my friends told me you need a little something yellow in every room of your house for a little sunshine. I'm glad I'm not the only one who makes those mistakes.
ReplyDeleteRed and yellow--always a happy combination. Scrappy is best in my book! What a great quilt design. I like the setting so much! Hope to see it quilted someday :)
ReplyDeleteI love it - especially with scrappy nine patches. How are you planning on quilting it? I smiled at your piecing mistake - I've done that too :0)
ReplyDeleteme being me, i love the mistake version! i always like what i call 'an element of surprise' in things. love the colour combination also.
ReplyDeleteVery spicy, very nice. I love your oops! - good thing that at least you have a picture of it :-)
ReplyDeleteWonderfully vibrant quilt Janet, but am really taken with the idea of numbering and lettering the pins......brilliant! Thanks so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI love it, Janet! I'm not a *yellow* person, but lately I've seen a number of quilts featuring it and I'm coming around...quickly!
ReplyDeleteWhat a striking quilt! I even really like your dyslexic version.
ReplyDeletegosh it is beautiful, thanks for sharing
ReplyDeletelove kathie's work too
Christine

What a gorgeous quilt - I would never have thought to put those colours together but they look fantastic.
ReplyDeleteso glad you shared your version! just love the red and yellow combo, maybe we need to do another one???
ReplyDeletenothing better than turkey red and chrome yellow, agree?
Kathie
Love your quilt! Kathie's quilt designs are the best!
ReplyDeleteGreat collaboration!! I just love the combo, you may have convinced me to do something very similar. I just love it!
ReplyDeleteGlad you had fun!
ReplyDeleteThis quilt is so beautiful! I love it! You are giving me some inspiration for what to do with some 60-odd nine patches I have sitting around collecting dust. Your layout is divine.
ReplyDeleteWow Janet - its just wonderful! Your version turned out fantastic. How fun to make your own version along with Kathie. You know I'm a yellow and red girl too. Its such a happy combo.
ReplyDeleteOoooo your quilt is beautiful!! I was looking so hard to find the goof (which I never seem to be able to find when someone makes an error) and here you had fixed it already LOL. I was excited to see Kathie's quilt in the magazine :0)
ReplyDeleteCrispy
Great quilt Janet....love the yellow and red...just love it! You and Kathie are amazing with all you get done!
ReplyDeleteOh, you two girls creating magic again - cannot believe it! Saw the most fab cheddar yesterday - guess what? _ still not driving, so I'm ringing for postage tomrrow - follow this Blog, lol!
ReplyDeleteHugs - Lurline♥
I hope that wasn't made for a bed because it's much too vibrant for anyone to get any sleep. ;>
ReplyDeleteSeriously, how wonderful and vivid!

It's a beauty!! I have to laugh since I do the same thing. There is something mysterious that happens between the design wall and the sewing machine. LOL What will you do with it when it's finished?
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your scrappy version! Good job to both you and Kathie!
ReplyDeleteIt really is pure sunshine. I love it!
ReplyDeleteYour version is wonderful, Janet! Always an admirer of red and chrome yellow! I was lingering in this section at a quilt shop just the other day. I got a fun bubbly stripe with some black and green. It's so easy to get a block turned on the way to the machine. I am regularly going back to the laid out blocks to doublecheck myself. I need to mark some pins like yours!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous quilt! I love it! And that chrome yellow really zings ;o)
ReplyDeleteOh Janet...I'm 'swooning' over this one...great colors.....LOL...you know....it is less than 3 ft from my design wall to my machine...in fact...I usually just swirl around in my chair....but like Victoria says...I can sure forget where I'm at in that short a distance!!!
ReplyDeleteAt least you spotted it before the quilt was finished - I once spotted a block the wrong way round in a quilt when I was taking the final photos .....
ReplyDeleteYep, mmmmmmm, that's more than a simple, just-overlook-it mistake !
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, because I searched the FIRST photo looking for the mistake, and I was going to tell you that you fixed it for nothing, because I could find nothing wrong ! Then I saw the second shot and laughed. In our little group of quilters, the Outlaws, we have one DEAR friend whom we all call "Flip", because she almost never finishes anything without finding a glaring flipped block or section.
What a lovely quilt...an eye catcher for sure!
ReplyDeleteAnother beauty, Janet...and my favorite colors too!
ReplyDeleteYou already had a lot of lovely comment but it didn't stop me to say that this is one of the loveliest quilt (tops) I saw lately. Beautiful colours. A very nice combination to remember.
ReplyDeleteGroetjes
Annemieke
It is spectacular!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteJanet I absolutely LOVE your version! Very much!!!
ReplyDeleteAs one might say here in Canada.O fuddle duddle!! Interesting colur combination. Not my colours but I appreciate how well you have made this quilt. Well done
ReplyDeleteHugs
Your quilt is beautiful! I love the use of all the scraps! Fantastic job!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only one who gets dyslexic about layouts. Sometimes it really does my head in!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty. I, too, love red and yellow.
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome quilt!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, Janet! Your dyslexic mishap caused me to smile. I have a way of doing that too!
ReplyDeleteAnd, don't you love the names...chrome yellow, poison green, madder, etc...?!
Lovely! Those colors look great together and I really love the scrappy-ness!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt looks fantastic Janet! I will have to go have a look at Kathie's. It is so much more fun when you make it with someone else and get to see the different interpretations.
ReplyDeleteOh I just LOVE your version!!!!!
ReplyDeleteDoes this make me happy or what? Oh it does. Beautiful, Janet. Absolutely beautiful. You make me smile, smile, smile! Gosh this is fantastic. Simply perfect.
ReplyDeleteDelighted by your work over coffee, *karendianne.
LOVE that quilt. Loved Kathy's too. What's a little mistake?? lol But you fixed it up nicely.
ReplyDeleteGreat job.
Looks like a summer picnic - ketchup and mustard - love it!
ReplyDeleteHi, I just found your blog by browsing...and I just REALLY NEED to know about the quilt on your header!! It looks so beautiful. I can it's a wedding ring with applique. Is it your pattern? The colours look heavenly too. It's making me drool.:D
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt Janet! I love the red with yellow. :)
ReplyDeleteI really like your rendition of the quilt, it's super! I also fell in love with Kathie's design and just finished my own version of it...mine is just much smaller.
