I promised myself that I would finish the quilting on this cot quilt that I've been very, very tardy about finishing. In my defense, it is a very warm puffy wool batting, too hot for summer and my GS has just gone into a cot after being in a baby hammock. It's done now but I need to bind it with some orange and I've run out of the stripe I used. Maybe if I got all different oranges and did a scrappy binding? The whole quilt was made entirely from stash in the cupboard and that feels good.
My reward for doing the cot quilt was to get some stitches into this one. I'm using varigated perle cottons, (number 8) and just picking up whichever one takes my fancy.
I'm doing all the straight lines and outline quilting by eye without any marking.
It was hard to come up with something in these bigger spaces, I got there in the end.
I'm loving the quilt even more now it has quilting added. Just a note to those of you who want to give big stitching a go, make sure the knot you pull through is small and be careful, too hard of a tug and you may tear the fabric. Sometimes it helps to press your finger down on the fabric behind the knot to create some tension.
I raced to get some klosje blocks done in time for today, these fifteen were hurriedly stitched last night and added to the pile makes for a total of
101
Happy stitching, Janet

ReplyDeleteThe cot quilt is so sweet. I love the big stitching! Never have seen that but it may be something I could handle much easier. All the little bowties are lovely!
ReplyDelete101 what. How did that happen. That time went quick. Isn't it great to complete a quilt froms stash. I am glad you are enjoying all of your hand quilting. It is very pretty.
ReplyDeleteJanet beautiful stitches on your quilt. I made a cot quilt with that same fabric last year. Your spool collection is growing. Love it.
ReplyDeleteOH JANET! I'm having a Saturday morning swoon here! LOVE your big stitch on the Kaffe quilt. Don't look away from it, I'm going to come and steal it. You'll know who it was if it turns up missing. Just stunning! Sometimes I find it can help get the knot through if I gently scratch at the knot where it sits on top of the fabric. Maybe it opens up the fibers a little bit more just to get the knot through. All right, I do not want to go to work today -- I want to work on my quilt.
ReplyDeleteEvery time I come over to your blog I just know it is going to be GOOD and once again today you delighted me with that Big Stitch! It is awesome on the gorgeous quilt! Envy here!!
ReplyDeleteI thought I could not possibly love your quilt any more and then you add the big stitch and *swoon*...I am totally infatuated!! It is positively fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI have not had electricity for three days so although a gorgeous sunny day and a yard in need of some spring work beckons, I must carve out a little time in the sewing room now that it's finally restored. Your post simply compels me to go make beautiful things!

Your work is so inspiring. I'm supposed to be rounding up my tax info today and I just want to get in my sewing room after looking at your post! But the tax man cometh, so I best be pushing paper instead of fabric today.

ReplyDeleteThe variegated thread is gorgeous!!!! I love the look of the big stitches in that quilt too. So cool.
Janet, this is so inspiring. As Sharon said, taxes must be worked on today, but I'd rather be quilting! Please do share a post here on the size of needle, etc, that you are using. I plan to Big Stitch the next quilt that is going into my hoop, as soon as I finish piecing the backing. Lots of gratitude coming your way from lushly green Washington state, where a wool batting would be welcome at the moment! ; )
ReplyDeleteJanet posted on Feb 20th the info we are looking for:
ReplyDelete"I love to use the variegated threads, either perle cottons or the Caron brand of sashiko thread.
I still use a lap hoop, keeping the quilt loose in it and a #5 embroidery needle. I need a rubber finger on my index finger to help pull the needle through.
In big stitch quilting, the stitches are 1/8" up to 1/4" long." Click on here Big Stitching link to find this and more info. Thanks Janet!!!!!! Following your quilting adventures is great fun and an educational exprerience! ~ Ronda

Pretty hand-quilting on the cot quilt, very classic and sweet! The Kaffe Fassett quilt is a beauty, and your quilting adds a lot to it, lovely selection of colors and patterns. Big stitch with 8 perle cotton is on my list of what to try!

Great work! :) I can't wait to see the Kaffe quilt finished, you are doing a beautiful job. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat quilting. Thanks for the tip. I want to get a top done so I can try it. It looks so great and the colors are so fun.
ReplyDeleteBeeuteeful!! I love all things hand quilted. Another tip on pulling knots through is to insert the eye of the needle in first to make a bigger opening for the knot to slip through. I learned that tip from Rusty Hedrick - a prolific quilter in Southern Cali.
ReplyDeleteThe quilting you're doing looks absolutely fabulous! Gorgeous. Your klosjes are fabulous. Love the fabrics you're using.
ReplyDeleteI have been trying to do the Big Stitch on my quilts too. I just love that I can take TV hours and turn it into hand quilting!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip on the rubber finger cover to pull the needle through. I just discovered using flex-wrap works too.
I hope some day my Big Stitch quilting will look as nice as yours. I need to work on my spacing.
Your work is always gorgeous, and this big stitching is so yummy !
