Back to the drawing board.

Remember this old thing I was working on? Well it's been calling my name, so out it came from the lucky dip box. I've been distracted with my many other projects but it's time to do another panel I thought to myself. It is of course, my humble version of the famous Susan McCord vine quilt. The original quilt can be pictured here.

I'm drawing each vine out individually because I'm just not clever enough to randomly place stems and leaves to achieve what I want. That Susan sure was the quilting genius she has come to be known as.

Apart from a bit of drawing and hand quilting, I have managed to complete the nine patches in the swap Christine organised and posted those off.

Also, last week I recieved a win on a giveaway, lucky me! Check out the cherry pie pincushion, it's made so beautifully and it's just adorable with it's special pins. Cori from Creativety Amongst Chaos makes all sorts of delicious pie pincushions and now sells the pattern on her website Chitter Chatter Designs for a very reasonable price.

Since my last few posts have been all about things curvey, I dragged out this unfinished quilt to show you what has become one of my (not so secret now)  ufo's. The thing is that I now don't like the fabrics in it, its been so long in the finishing that my tastes have completely changed. I bought every yellow and purple fabric that was on sale that I could, and put what I thought was the right border on it. Now I think the leafy dark border is one of my yucky, ugly, eeeww, what was I thinking fabric choices.

I quite like the middle part and I like the big stitch quilting on it so maybe, and I say just maybe, I will remove the borders which aren't quilted down yet and turn it into a finished smaller quilt. This one is a monster. Maybe it can go back into the cupboard too.

  8. Wowzer on the vines! That's alotta applique. That is the sweetest cherry pie I've seen and no calories either. I have had problems going back to a quilt I didn't "love" any more. Hard to finish...but that is a purple and yellow beauty.

  13. The vines are gorgeous! I really like the purple and yellow quilt. I love purple but I really don't like yellow and I still love it. I think you should remove the borders and finish. It is great.

As far as the purple and yellow....well, it doesn't quite look like you, and I think you are onto something as far as removing the border.
    Cute, cute pincushion!!!

  20. I was so happy to see you're working on the vines quilt again. It's one of my absolute favorites! It's just stunning.
I can't see enough of the border fabric on your purple and yellow to judge how it's looking, but if YOU don't like it..that's what matters. The center portion is just beautiful and the quilting suits the piecing so well. I say...remove that border if it's putting you off. It will be wonderful. :)

  21. The vine applique is stunning. What a job to recreate the original! And the cherry pie pincushion is one of the cutest pincushions I've ever seen!

  22. The pin cushion is adorable!
I can't imagine me making the leaf quilt you are working on. That's a ton of leaves to applique.

  23. Love the vine quilt, of course. But I like the purple and yellow one, especially the circular quilting pattern you chose. I hope you find peace with the border because the center is too good to miss. Thanks for sharing.

  24. I love your susan M vine quilt. I'm happy to be watching someone recreate that masterpiece and you are doing a masterly job.

  26. Susan McCord quilt is just gorgeous. I love her designs with the strippy fabrics - hoe much time do you think these took her - amazing. Your version is stunning - keep at it I'm enjoying watching.

Now the purple and yellow - I've done this too - left something too long and then wondering why I liked it - bit I like yours and Big stitching is a bit of a chuckle for these tiny stitches! Once you've pulled off the border if you still don't like it - you could donate to a local good cause as a raffle quilt. Someone else would absolutely love it.

  27. My goodness you have such marvelous pictures on your post today! I love your vines so far - they are wonderful. What a fun pincushin! It's a shame to have come so far with the purple and yellow quilt and not finish it - it is really lovely - get rid of the part you don't like and move forward with the part you do like. Easier said than done :0)

  28. Well since I've yet to see ANYTHING as amazing as this vine quilt I'm speechless and can hardly move on. I knew you were talented and a real treat to "know" but now, well now I'm feeling utterly fortunate to call myself a "bleader" of your "blog." hee... The cherry pie pincushion is too, too cute and I think some day I'll have to learn to make myself a cute pincushion. I love this! And oh my but don't you just loveeee your nine patches that you send off? I do. There's just not much as lovely as cute nine patches. Well, except for Vines! You made my quilty day, *karendianne.

You are amazing with your quilts..
That vine quilt is so much work..good for you for sticking with it..
    I love the pincushion..

  30. Wow.....that vine quilt makes mine look like a kindergarten drawing ! Awesome !
I admire you for sticking with it.....what a testimonial to your patience , not to mention skill !

I love the center of the purple quilt. I can't tell what the border fabric looks like, but if you have any doubt, remove it now ! I once bought a 'bargain fabric' for the back of a favorite quilt top, and have not wanted to SEE the backside of that quilt since it was finished......yuk ! I knew at the time that it wasn't right, but tried to save money...big mistake !

Congrats on the pincushion....how adorable !

  31. Goody, another vine panel! I like the surprises like blue and yellow in the leaves.

Yesterday I ordered a little pattern and told myself that was it for awhile. Then I saw that pie pincushion. So much for restraint! (Ordered while I was posting this comment.) Next time can you try showing something less tempting? lol.

  32. Sorry I have to laugh we all have things that we look at now and wonder... its funny I remember when that style of fabric was around ala Hoffman. The quilt should be called 'don't hassle the hoff'

The vines are looking spectacular! It is amazing what you can draft and translate in to a quilt!

  33. I still gasp in awe at the sight of that vine, I think my first visits to you were about this.. and I have been coming back ever since. :-)

That is the cutest little pie pincushion I have ever seen.

And I so know what you mean about ufo quilts from several years back. Good idea about removing the border if you hate it. The middle really is good.. and I love that quilting! You shouldn't let that go to waste.

  35. I'm with you on the Susan McCord quilts. She was amazing. I was fortunate enough to see that quilt at a museum near my home a few years ago along with some of her other works and they are even more impressive in person. Can you believe she had 8 kids and ran a farm too?? Yous will be just as impressive.
