Still appliqueing

Could you believe there was a pair of scissors missing from this photo? Do you think its a sickness to still want more? I know every pair intimately and when DH says "why do you need another pair of scissors?" I just look sweetly at him and say "for the same reason you need another torch, one for every job!" Oh ok, now he gets it, lol.
See that teeny tiny pair of snips in the middle, they are airline approved but I'm always too shy to sew on flights. I don't like being looked at. And how about this guy? I think I should make a pincushion to go with him.
I've already chosen and prepped my fabrics for my third block of the Mary Mannakee quilt.
Here's block two all done, I just can't leave this project alone at the moment. I'm sure I'll slow down, I'm just keen at the moment. I think it's because I'm going on holiday soon and I don't think I'll be stitching much at all and I have to leave my applique at home so I'll just get a few weeks worth in before I go.
I was having a nice browse through this book today, well it's actually a catalogue of album quilts that went to Japan some years ago.
Now I really like this block on the bottom right and it might do for the MM as there are a couple of blocks I want to leave out of the original pattern.
Lovely quilts on every page.

  1. A toothpick voodoo doll! Funny. :o) Didn't know there were airline approved scissors. Would you tell me the brand and where you found them? I know crochet hooks are approved but apparently not knitting needles!

    More gorgeous applique!!!

  2. Yep you have a few scissors but you don't have my favorite ones. They are so old that I can't make out the manufacturer anymore but they are longish and slender with an angled blade. They are just perfect for snipping inner curves and sharp inner points. I stole them from my hubby's tool box.

Your second block is wonderful and I would really love to see that block in the book once your make it.

  3. Well, I'm snickering at the toothpick voodoo doll - cute!!! LOL

I can see why you want to continue to work on this project - I call this being smitten! :-)

  4. Ahem - I have an ongoing love affair with scissors, also. I love them! I'll have to round them up and share one day. LOL

  5. Me again - teehee!!! I enlarged the picture of the scissors - the tiny, airline approved ones are beyond cute. LOL

  7. I don't think I've ever seen a scissor collection quite as complete as yours.
And you are going on vacation without your applique?

  8. Oh I have a scissor fetish as well. I have just discovered the Kai brand because one of the somewhat LQS's is carrying them now. I really like them, but not as well as my Dovo's.

Love the fabrics and the toothpick voodoo doll is too cute!

    Your block is exquisite!

  9. I know what you mean about being too shy to stitch on flights -- I have a hard time with that too (or anywhere out in public). It draws so much attention, and sometimes I prefer to just blend into the crowd.

Love your scissors and ride that wave of enthusiasm on the applique blocks. You're right, we often do have periods where we slow down, so keep it up while you have the drive. That quilt is going to be a beauty!

  12. Janet your applique is just spectacular. I look at it and I am just marveled.
Like you I too love scissors especially the Gingher ones.
Like gardening tools I need a pair everywhere and my husband just understands now.
If I am gardening in the front, side, back, east ,west, I like my supplies to be close by.
Just like quilting, whereever I quilt, my supplies should be close by.

  14. I used to travel a lot of work and always had a bit of stitching in my bag. Amazing how many folks will sit down next to you and just start talking about their grandmother/aunt/cousin who is or was a quilter.

    Enjoy seeing your MM blocks....

  15. I'd love to get a copy of the MHS book - it looks wonderful! Besides the center block of MM, which do you want to replace? I did that on my Circuit Rider top and I'm very happy with my replacements. I like them much better than the blocks I left out of the original.

Who makes that leafy, feathery fabric? I don't think I've ever seen that one.

  16. Your block is lovely! Wow you get a lot done. I like the one checkered leaf in the block you like - makes me smile. It's a great block! Would you call that a horseshoe?

  28. I inherited my grandmother's collection of embroidery and sewing scissors and have done my best to add to them. I just can't pass up a pair of good scissors.
I've really enjoyed seeing the close ups of your applique blocks and stitches and reading your tips. I sure wish I could applique as fast as you and Kathie! Even with over 20 years of practice, I'm still rather slow.
    Have fun on your holiday.

  34. Oh my, Janet, I don't know what to comment on first. Your 2nd block is just gorgeous. What beautiful work you do....spectacular skills! And the scissors? Swooning. Of course, I am extremely impressed that you could collect them all to show us a photo! I don't have nearly as many but I love a pretty new pair of scissors -- I just don't know where they all are. They get tucked away with a project that is being taken along and then they go missing (ahem, along with the project?). I'm going back to look at them all now. And their lovely jewelry...very pretty!

  35. I love your arrangement of scissors. I didn't know about the small airline approved scissors. I fly enough that these would be nice to have. You are flying along with the applique and I don't even have my pattern yet. What's taking them so long.

  36. I love all those scissors! When we cleaned out dear mil's home, she had over 100 pairs, most antique...I love them! Very pretty block you are working on.

  41. I love scissors and I only have 3 pair! Wow I am seriously behind in collecting them..lol! I love those fabrics and I have only seen 2 of them before..your collection, along with Kathie's is fantastic!

Now I can't think of a word for how your block looks...magnificent is too ordinary. You really do the most wonderful work!

  42. I can't believe there is someone who has more scissors than me! I must show my DH this photo! I am a scissor addict and I've found a partner. Oh, oh!

I'm just catching up on my blog reading after being computerless for 8 days. My you've been busy, Janet. Your MM blocks are stunning, but I knew they would be. I finally broke down and ordered the pattern today and after seeing your blocks, I'm more pumped than ever now! But first I have to decide which scissors to use...just kidding!

Thanks again for the inspiration. Truly amazing work!

  43. Had to come back and ask a question..where do you find the beaded scissor fobs? I realize they are knitting needle point covers but do you get them locally. Guess I might have to find some beads and make a few!
